Nick Hildebrand / Friday, May 4, 2018 / Categories: All News, Academics, Arts & Letters, Economics, Research Sociology major takes top prize at regional symposium Grove City College Sociology major Emma Thomas ’18 captured a first place award for her study of the impact of cell phones on personal relationships at the fifth annual Northeast Ohio Undergraduate Sociological Symposium (NEOUSS) at Oberlin (Ohio) College last month. This is the third consecutive year that Grove City College sociology students have earned awards at NEOUSS for their research. Thomas, of Colorado Springs, Colo., won the award for her poster “Are you becoming less connected by increased connections: A study of cell phones.” She also presented a paper “Coffee Shops and Urban Gardens: Solutions to Deteriorating Community?” Also at the April 14 symposium, Grove City College students McKenzie Black ’19 of North Canton, Ohio, and Miranda Prough ’19 of McVeytown, Pa., presented a research poster entitled “The Rural Marketplace: Farmers’ Markets, Supermarkets, and Food Availability.” NEOUSS draws student researchers from Michigan, Ohio, and Western Pennsylvania. At this year’s symposium, more than 50 students from 30 colleges and universities presented papers or posters.
