Jazz groups to present "cool" concert

Grove City College music students will provide “cool music” with jazz tenor trombonist Robert K. Matchett III at the ninth annual Winter Jazz and Christmas Concert on Friday, Dec. 7. The concert, featuring the Jazz Ensemble, Stage Band and Grove City College Singers, will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Ketler Auditorium of the Pew Fine Arts Center. The concert is free and open to the public, and free parking is available for all attendees.

Guest musician Matchett is an adjunct instructor of trombone at Slippery Rock University and the band director at Seneca Valley Senior High School in Harmony, Pa. As a trombonist, he has performed and toured with groups including the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Ray Charles and the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra.

The concert will feature a number of traditional Christmas tunes and a variety of big band, popular and jazz favorites. The music will include Jingle Bells, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, The First Day of Christmas, Joy to the World and many more. The audience will be treated to an array of motion and Christmas lights in a visual and aural experience.

The Jazz Ensemble and Stage Band are under the direction of Dr. Joseph Pisano ’94, assistant chair of the department of music and fine arts and associate professor of music and fine arts technology. The Grove City College Singers are directed by Stacy Paparone ’93, instructor of music and fine arts.
