B.A. in Spanish

Take your passion for Spanish to the next level.

With a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Grove City College, you will gain fluency and cultural awareness through engaging classes taught en español and a multitude of chances to study abroad. As a Spanish language major, you will grow in compassion and develop marketable skills prized by employers — such as the ability to infer meaning, appreciate nuance, adapt quickly, and solve problems. Whether your dream is to interpret in the courtroom, write for a bilingual magazine, advance freedom abroad through public policy efforts, or spread the gospel in Spanish-speaking communities, our degree in Spanish can get you there

Program Distinctives
  • Rigorous, Christ-centered education – You will be well prepared academically and gain compassion for humanity, emboldening you in your calling.
  • Accessible faculty mentors – Highly accomplished and well-traveled Christian faculty who are very involved in the department will encourage your growth as a Spanish speaker, collaborator, and critical thinker.
  • Immersive learning experience – All of your major-specific courses are taught entirely in Spanish, setting you up for in-depth knowledge and mastery of the language.
  • Dynamic classroom environment – You will enjoy fun and creative learning experiences with encouragement and support from peers and faculty that will grow your confidence.
  • Study abroad opportunities around the globe.
    • International immersion study – Spanish majors are encouraged to pursue an immersion studies program to get firsthand exposure to the Hispanic world in any region of interest. Whether you hope to study abroad for a semester, summer, or an entire year, studying abroad is a unique way to establish mastery of the language, develop international contacts around the world, and obtain relevant internship or job experience before graduating. Recently, students have studied in Quito, Ecuador; Guatemala City, Guatemala; and a number of cities in Spain.
    • The Office of Global Programs – Beginning your freshman year, you will have access to a wealth of resources and seasoned advisors who will help you explore international education program options and map out a plan that will serve your academic and personal goals while allowing you to graduate on time.
  • Flexibility to double major or minor – Like most of our Spanish students, you might double major to enhance your marketability and potential for international or intercultural impact.
    • Choose a complementary discipline such as French, business, biology, finance, history, international studies, economics, communication, law, philosophy, or psychology.
    • Many large companies such as Citigroup, General Motors, IBM, DuPont, and Westinghouse prefer to hire individuals with a deep knowledge of more than one discipline.
  • Internship opportunities – Gain valuable intercultural exposure and competence in a wide range of professional environments.
  • Research opportunities – Grow in expertise and care for other cultures by conducting research with faculty or through independent study.
  • Active student-led groups – Join vibrant campus groups including the Spanish Club and Grove City’s chapter of Alpha Mu Gamma (the national foreign language honorary and service organization).
  • Vocation-enriching humanities core courses – Deepen your critical thinking, writing, and other communication skills while cultivating empathy and a well-rounded worldview.
Career Opportunities & Outcomes
  • Career paths: translator, interpreter, curator, consultant, marketing associate, journalist, editor, foreign exchange trader, embassy staff person, teacher, and more.
  • Wide career opportunities – As a Spanish speaker, you will be in high demand in industries ranging from banking and finance to diplomacy, communication and education, foreign market analysis, hospitality, and more.
  • Outstanding career outcomes – Like 96% of Grove City College graduates, you will be well prepared to compete for seats in top graduate schools or launch into your career within six months of graduation.
    • Our Spanish graduates pursue careers in a wide array of fields.
    • Others pursue further education and have been admitted to prestigious graduate programs in the U.S. and around the world.
  • Valuable skills for any vocation – You will enter post-grad life with advanced proficiency in the Spanish language and a practical tool kit to thrive in challenging situations and help meet important needs across cultures.
Program Specifics
  • 33 major credit hours of rigorous undergraduate coursework ranging from grammar and cultural studies to history and civilization — designed to improve your oral expression, articulation, critical reading, and composition skills, as well as deepen your appreciation for the history and culture of the Spanish-speaking world. For detailed course descriptions, refer to the College Catalog.
    • Spanish core requirements include Intermediate Spanish I and II (or six hours of 300-level Spanish courses if you have already completed the intermediate equivalent) and Introduction to Literature and Film, as well as Conversation, Applied Phonetics, Composition and Grammar, and Hispanics in the United States.
    • The Spanish literature and culture requirement consists of one of these three options: Contemporary Spain, Medieval & Golden Age Spain, and The Spanish Enlightenment and Its Aftermath.
    • The Latin American literature and culture requirement consists of one of these three options: Foundations of Latin American Societies, Independence and National Identities in Latin America, and Peace and Reconciliation in Latin America.
    • Students also select from a range of elective options such as Ministry in Spanish, Professional Spanish and Business Culture in the Hispanic World.
    • Coursework toward the major begins with courses numbered 201 and higher. Advanced students choose among upper-level cultural, literary, and professional courses. Students with no prior exposure to Spanish may, with careful planning, begin with Spanish 101 in the fall of freshman year and complete advanced coursework in four years.
      • Students who have had prior exposure to a language but have not taken an AP exam or received college credit in the language must take the Foreign Language Placement Exam before registering for their first modern languages course at Grove City College.
