Grove City College offers a philosophy major that will prepare you for profound impact in practically any field. In pursuit of your philosophy degree, you will discover what constitutes the good life and learn how to pursue it wholeheartedly. As you cultivate the disciplines of deep reading, critical thinking, reasoning, and clear argumentation (in-demand skills in today’s marketplace), you will grow into a person of substantial influence who seeks and points others to Christ for ultimate answers to life’s biggest questions.

Program Highlights
  • Personal access to faculty mentors—accomplished scholars and teachers who will sharpen your intellect and strengthen your faith.
  • 33 major credit hours of courses in which you will examine the essential ideas of human thought and ethical action. For detailed course descriptions, view the College Catalog.
    • Core requirements include introduction to philosophy or introduction to ethics, symbolic or general logic, ancient philosophy, medieval philosophy, modern philosophy, metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, philosophy of religion, and philosophy seminar.
    • Major elective options include symbolic logic, general logic, bio-medical ethics, philosophy of law, classical political thought, modern political thought, science and the human, studies in philosophy, advanced studies in philosophy, political philosophy and the Christian intellectual tradition, C. S. Lewis, and God, suffering, and narrative.
  • Freedom to double major and/or minor in other disciplines, which is recommended and common among our students.
  • Internship opportunities to grow professionally in the field.
    • Recently students have interned with such organizations as the National Center for Policy Analysis, The Heritage Foundation, Archeological Conservation Institute (Belmonte, Italy), and the Pennsylvania Family Institute, as well as law firms and newspapers. 
  • Opportunities to conduct research with faculty and participate in academic conferences and seminars across the country.
  • Potential to be inducted into Grove City College’s chapter of the Phi Sigma Tau national honor society, through which we promote student interest in research and advanced study of the field, providing opportunities for the publication of student research of merit, fortifying community among talented philosophy students, and popularizing interest in philosophy across campus.
  • Award-winning debate team, philosophy club, and other student-led organizations in which you can participate and grow in servant leadership.

    • Recent graduates have obtained positions as software developers, journalists, teachers at classical Christian schools, and fellows with the Acton Institute and Pittsburgh Fellows Program, as well as other reputable companies and organizations.
    • Of those pursuing further education, our graduates have been admitted to such prestigious institutions as Oxford University, Chicago Law, University of Notre Dame, MIT, Boston University, Harvard Law, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and Reformed Theological Seminary, among others.
