What is the most important piece of advice you give students to help them succeed?

There is no shortcut for achieving excellence. Anything you decide to do, you must decide to do it well, and no one else can do it for you once the decision is made.

Is there any additional personal experience you would like to share?

I was four years old when I first showed a passion for conducting when I jumped out of my church’s pew and began conducting the church choir alongside its director. I began my formal music training at the age of six when I began taking piano lessons from a local piano teacher in my hometown of Ambridge, PA.

In addition to my duties at Grove City College, I am a guest conductor for honor ensembles and have presented over 100 papers and clinics at universities and music conferences across the U.S. I was named the 2011 Mike Kovin’s TI:ME Teacher of the Year and have been a recipient of the Pennsylvania Music Education Association’s Citation of Excellence and the Jazz Educator Network’s Outstanding Music Teacher Award.

I currently serves as the Teacher’s Guide writer for the print magazine In Tune Monthly and am a contributing writer for Teaching Music Magazine. My articles have appeared in print magazines including School Band and OrchestraHalftime Magazine, and Australia’s Education Solutions Technology Magazine. I am currently the President of the Pennsylvania Bandmasters Association and a member of band and music honoraries, including Phi Beta Mu International, the American Bandmasters Association, the National Band Association, and Pi Kappa Lambda.
