As a music major at Grove City College, you will benefit from personal instruction, robust performance and leadership opportunities, and the freedom to hone your passions on and off stage. Being immersed in the collaborative community of our music program will help shape you as a person of great integrity, faith, and musical prowess. You will also have the flexibility to complement your degree with a double major or minor in another discipline. With a well-rounded degree in music from Grove City College, you will be equipped to influence and enrich lives through diverse career options or pursue a graduate-level degree to widen your sphere of influence.

  • Accessible faculty mentors – Highly accomplished and widely talented Christian faculty who hold membership in such organizations as ACDA, American Composers Forum, ASTA, BMI, CODA, College Music Society, NAfME, PADESTA, PMEA, Phi Beta Mu, SMTE, and TI:ME.
  • Specialized training – A Bachelor of Music (B.M.) will provide more extensive music credits, personal instruction, and career preparation than you would receive with a Bachelor of Arts music degree – typical from most other institutions.
  • On-campus performance opportunities – 11 faculty-directed ensembles, including marching band, symphonic orchestra, and touring choir; and more than 15 chamber ensembles including string quartets, woodwind quintets, flute choir, trumpet ensemble, and chamber singers, among others.
  • Senior capstone recital – Perfect your performance skills and prepare for a fulfilling career in music or for graduate school auditions at top universities throughout the United States.
  • Internship opportunities – Gain real-world experience in the music world with respected organizations such as Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Trinity Fellows Program, Glimmerglass Music Festival, JR Judd Violins, Csehy Summer School of Music, Butler Symphony Orchestra, and Lamplight Artists.
  • Undergraduate leadership opportunities – Grow as a leader and boost your resume with opportunities such as conducting and leading large and small ensembles, partnering with faculty on research, creating original compositions, participating in state-level music organizations, and more.

    • 22 Boston Steinway practice pianos and four-manual Kimball organ.
    • 28 practice rooms, organ studio, and harp studio.
    • 700-seat performance hall and theatre, 170-seat recital hall, and large ensemble rehearsal hall.

  • Exceptional career outcomes – 100% of Grove City College music graduates in 2024 obtained employment or were accepted into graduate school. Our music majors excel in practically every arena of the music industry, with recent graduates employed by groups including The Piano Academy of Scranton, Washington Concert Opera, JR Judd Violins, Stage AE Pittsburgh, U.S. Army and Airforce military bands, and Urban Impact, as well as private and Christian schools – from the elementary to collegiate level.
  • Advanced degree opportunities – Of those who choose to continue their education, recent graduates have pursued advanced degrees in choral, orchestral, and wind conducting; theory, composition, and music education; as well as vocal, piano, and instrumental performance. Graduates have pursued such degrees at Carnegie Mellon University, Peabody Conservatory, George Mason University, Indiana University, Notre Dame, Pennsylvania State University, Royal Academy (London), Westminster Choir College, Yale, and Arizona State University School of Law.

Program Specifics
  • Curriculum requirements – 46 major credit hours of rigorous undergraduate coursework that lays a solid foundation in music with room to focus on your greatest areas of interest and develop a wide variety of skills in and beyond your major. Music core requirements and additional music requirements include the following (for detailed course descriptions, refer to the College Catalog).
    • Courses in Music Theory, Aural Skills, Music History, Beginning Conducting, and Advanced Choral or Instrumental Conducting.
    • Private music lessons in your primary area of voice, piano, or instrument with the same instructor every semester.
    • Participation in at least one ensemble every semester, regardless of your primary instrument.
    • Senior capstone recital.
  • Musical theater minor option – Music majors often add this minor, as well as other minors in the sciences, liberal arts, and business.
Audition Information

An audition for admission into the music program is required for music majors and minors. For comprehensive audition information, please refer to Instructions for Music Applicants.

  • Musical selections of the standard academic repertoire for your instrument or voice are appropriate (standard, classical, musical theatre, contemporary, etc.), and two or three selections of contrasting style are preferred. 
  • Regardless of your instrument or voice, you will be tested in music theory, tonal memory, and rhythmic skills.
  • Your application for admission to Grove City College must be received by the Office of Admissions by your selected application deadline; you must also complete your music audition by that deadline.
