Tate J. Fegley

Dr. Tate Fegley is Assistant Professor and Chair of Business and Economics at Montreat College. Appointed in 2022, he has overseen the development of the programs in business and economics at the college.  He holds a Ph.D. and an M.A. in economics from George Mason University and an M.A. and B.A. in criminal justice from Boise State University. 

Dr. Fegley has received several academic awards including the O.P. Alford III Prize in Political Economy from the Mises Institute in 2025 and 2021, the Elinor Ostrom Prize from the World Interdisciplinary Network in 2023, the Gary Schlarbaum Award from the Mises Institute in 2023. He is a fellow at the Mises Institute, since 2022, and at the Independent Institute, since 2020. In addition, he was a graduate fellow at George Mason University from 2016-2020, a Humane Studies fellow at the Institute for Humane Studies from 2017-2019, and a Summer Fellow at the Mises Institute in 2015-2016 and 2018.

Dr. Fegley has author or co-authored 20 articles in refereed journals including Public Choice, the Journal of Institutional Economics, the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, the Quarterly Journal of Austrian Economics, and the Journal of Libertarian Studies.

His research interests include the economics of policing and incarceration, property rights, and welfare economics
