Breen Student Union is one of Grove City College’s busiest spots. Located at a crossroads on upper campus, it is a focal point where student lives cross, friendships are sealed, and the College community grows.
Built in 2004, the student center was named for College Board of Trustees President Ed Breen and his wife Lynn, both Grovers, in 2007. It carries another moniker, the Gee or Gedunk, a name with a rich history on the campus of Grove City College.
After the Second World War, hundreds of veterans joined the student body thanks to the G.I. Bill. They brought a new culture to campus, including verbiage from their service days. Gedunk was a term used in the Navy for the canteen or snack bar on a ship and it stuck when it was applied to the Fountain Room in Alumni Hall, which then served as a student activity center. For 50 years, the Gedunk or Gee was THE place to be on campus. MORE>>
That energy moved to the new Gedunk when Breen opened. Like the old student center, it is a magnet for students hungry for connection and, since the snack bar was replaced with a Chick-fil-A restaurant in 2023, a taste of familiar fast food.
Breen Student Union combines form and function. A dramatic bay of windows forms one wall of the great hall, which features a cathedral ceiling and second floor gallery accessible via a grand staircase. This is where students meet to eat, study, and hang out. On a typical day, at least one student group will have a special table set up to raise money or awareness for a good cause.
It’s also where students pick up packages from the mail room, buy books and maybe some Wolverine swag from the bookstore, take a break in the spacious Commuter Lounge, or lock down some private study space in one of the fishbowl rooms.
Breen also houses the Student Life and Learning offices and a Great Room for meetings and special events.
