David Rathburn '79
Chairman of the Board of Trustees
After graduating from Grove City College in 1979, David Rathburn worked as an accountant at Price Waterhouse before joining Hopeman Brothers Marine Division of AWH Corp. in Waynesboro, Va., as assistant to the president.
Rathburn, who was elected chair of the Board in 2003, and his wife, Jayne, are entrepreneurs. Former owners of US Joiner LLC, a company that specializes in outfitting the interiors of ocean-going ships, Rathburn continues to operate the business. The Rathburns’ other businesses include Turnbull LLC, a manufacturer of metal furniture; Plumtree Properties, which builds custom homes; Glenmore Country Club; and Tymark Holdings and Beach Rentals LLC.
Rathburn gained experience at Hopeman Brothers, a company that specializes in interior outfitting of marine vessels. It does extensive work for the U.S. Navy, as well as for commercial liners, oil rigs, casinos and cruise ships.
In 1991, Rathburn was named president of Hopeman Brothers, and after 22 years, left to initiate his current venture.
With degrees in accounting, business administration and political science, Rathburn has served as chairman of the Allied Industries Committee for the Shipbuilders’ Council of America and as president of the board of directors for local Junior Achievement and United Way boards. He is a member of the Japan-Europe-Korea-United States International Shipbuilders Consortium and serves as a Seapower Ambassador.
Rathburn was elected as a member of the Grove City College Board of Trustees in 1992. After five years as chairman of the Enrollment and Student Affairs Committee, Rathburn became the youngest chair in the history of the College.
As a student at Grove City, Rathburn was president of the American Management Club and the Men's Governing Board, as well as vice president of SGA. He was the sports director for WSAJ, sang in the choir and was a brother of Nu Lambda Phi.
He and Jayne live in Keswick, Va., with their two sons, Mark and Tyler.
