Grove City College to offer master's degree in Kinesiology

Grove City College will begin offering a Master of Science Degree in Kinesiology next year that will enable graduates to advance and succeed in the growing health and fitness industry.

The new graduate program brings together the study of anatomy, kinesiology, physiology, nutrition, and exercise to prepare students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences to confidently move forward in their careers. Coursework begins in spring 2025.

The 33-credit program was developed for the career-focused adult learner and as a “plus one” to augment an undergraduate Exercise Science degree from Grove City College.

“The program is an excellent way to tap into a plentiful job market for the promotion of a healthier society through exercise and fitness programs,” said Dr. Christy L. Crute, executive director of the College’s Department of Graduate and Online Programs. It will prepare students for corporate and community fitness programs, health clubs, hospitals and medical practices, sales and marketing, other professional paths, and doctoral programs and research positions.

“We created the Master of Science in Kinesiology program because we know this will benefit students professionally,” Dr. Philip J. Prins, chair and associate professor of Exercise Science, said. “Students will explore the core courses at a master's level and directly apply practical skills in the lab. The program will cover a variety of different topics and that broad knowledge base means that graduates can apply their skills to a wide range of jobs,” Prins said.

The program’s lab component will include research that advances the understanding of human health, fitness, and performance. The Exercise Science Department has established Grove City College as one of the leading research institutions in the field of human performance and sports nutrition. Faculty members have published more than 30 scientific papers in the last decade and collaborated with some of the world’s leading exercise scientists.

“This program will allow students to perform critical research that would advance the emerging body of literature in human performance and nutrition areas,” Prins said.
