Violinist and concertmaster Kim holding recital and residency

The Grove City College Showcase Series, in partnership with the Department of Music, announces an artist residency with David Kim, concertmaster of The Philadelphia Orchestra.

Kim will work with Grove City College music students and present a public recital “From Prodigy to Professional - A Life in Music,” at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, 2016, in Ketler Auditorium of the Pew Fine Arts Center on campus. Tickets are available online at www.gcc.edu/davidkim.

The recital will include a mix of music and testimony as Kim describes his experiences and struggles to reach the pinnacle of his career. Interspersed with performances of some of his favorite works, this is a humorous, sometimes jarring, and often poignant story not to be missed. Grove City College music students will also have the opportunity to work with Kim during the time he is on campus and several students will participate in a 60-minute masterclass.

Born in Carbondale, Illinois in 1963, Kim started playing the violin at the age of 3 and began studies with the famed pedagogue Dorothy DeLay when he was just 8 years old. He later received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The Juilliard School. Kim was named concertmaster of The Philadelphia Orchestra in 1999.

Kim appears as soloist with The Philadelphia Orchestra each season as well as with numerous orchestras around the world. He also appears internationally at festivals such as Brevard, MasterWorks (USA) and Pacific (Japan). Mr. Kim has been awarded honorary doctorates from Eastern University in suburban Philadelphia, the University of Rhode Island, and Dickinson College.

His instruments are a J.B. Guadagnini from Milan, Italy, circa 1757 on loan from The Philadelphia Orchestra and a Michael Angelo Bergonzi from Cremona, circa 1754. Kim resides in a Philadelphia suburb with his wife Jane and daughters Natalie and Maggie. He is an avid runner, golfer, and outdoorsman.

Highlights of Mr. Kim’s 2016-17 season also include teaching/performance residencies at Bob Jones University, Messiah College, Roberts Wesleyan College, and Rice University's Shepherd School of Music, continued appearances as concertmaster of the All-Star Orchestra on PBS stations across the United States and online at the Kahn Academy; recitals, speaking engagements, and appearances with American orchestras; and the annual David Kim Orchestral Institute of Cairn University in Philadelphia where he is also a Professor of Violin Studies.

Kim will be joined by collaborative pianist Hugh Sung for the recital. Sung, hailed as one of the finest collaborative pianists of his generation, has performed and recorded with the likes of violinist Aaron Rosand, flutist Julius Baker and composers Jennifer Higdon, Robert Maggio and Harold Boatrite. He has also worked extensively with the Philadelphia and Baltimore Symphony Orchestras. Sung is also the parent of a Grove City College student.

He served on the faculty of The Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia for 19 years and in 2014 joined the roster of ArtistWorks, an online music and art school that teaches students through the use of innovative video curriculum that allows him to work directly with students anywhere in the world.
