Social work and sociology students' work recognized at regional conference

Grove City College sociology and social work students presented their work recently at the third annual Northeastern Ohio Undergraduate Sociology Symposium (NEOUSS) at Kent State University.

“This was a great conference, showcasing the top undergraduate sociological and social work research in the area, and our students made presentations that showed their commitment to researching serious sociological questions with thoroughness and methodological sophistication,” Dr. William Anderson, professor of sociology and social work, said. “As a group, their excellence speaks to why the undergraduate sociological research we are doing at Grove City College is of a high quality and seriousness that engages the scholarly community.”

Sociology major Emily Anne Dellinger ’17 of San Diego, Calif., won third place for her research paper entitled “Sleeping with the Fishes: A Structural Analysis of Seasonal Work in Naknek, Alaska.”

Other Grove City College students who attended the March 12 conference and presented work are:
 

• Megan Buehler ’16 of Bethlehem, Pa., a sociology and psychology double major, presented her paper “Gender, Religiosity and Attitudes Toward Sexualization of Women the Media.”
• Daisy Bowersox ’17of Mercer, Pa., a sociology major, presented her paper “A Study of Attitudes Toward Cohabitation: Examining Gender Differences.”
• Jordan Good ’17 of Palmyra, Pa., a sociology major, presented her poster “A Study of the Spiritual Disciplines: Examining the Relationship between Religious Disciplines and Service.”
• Emma Vetter ’17 of Gibsonia, Pa., a sociology and communications double major, presented her poster “Are You Really Going to Eat That? The Casual Connection between Perceived Eating Habits and Reference Groups.”

Grove City College was one of more than 100 higher education institutions throughout western Pennsylvania and northeastern Ohio participating in the symposium, which showcases the work of undergraduates from across the region who have interests in sociology and interdisciplinary work within the broad field of the social sciences. The conference provides students with the opportunity to present their work through poster, panel discussions or roundtables.
