Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra plays Thanksgiving show at GCC

The world-renowned Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is playing a special one-night-only concert at Grove City College at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, in Ketler Auditorium of Pew Fine Arts Center.

Tickets to the PSO’s “An American Thanksgiving” concert are still available. The orchestra will be in its full complement, so don’t miss an evening of music that will be the perfect precursor to every family’s Thanksgiving holiday. The orchestra, under the direction of Andres Franco, will perform works by great American composers such as Copeland, Bernstein and Barber, along with a rich sampling of Dvorak’s “New World.” These are some of the composers’ most beautiful and signature pieces, which capture both the spirit of America and the Thanksgiving season.

Sixteen student members of the Grove City College Orchestra will be playing with the PSO on two pieces in a side-by-side setting.

The concert will be preceded from 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. with a discussion led by Dr. Beverley Carter, Chair of the Music Department, and Dr. Joshua F. Drake, Professor of Music and Humanities, of the music being performed. Dr. Carter will focus on the background of the pieces being performed, including historical relevance and other musical associations, while Dr. Drake will provide some information on the specific musical components of the pieces. The lecture in Arnold Recital Hall in Pew Fine Arts Center is free and open to the public.
