College hosts symposium on challenging childhood behavior

Grove City College will host the Midwestern Early Childhood Council’s Early Childhood Symposium 2016 “Next Steps: Reframing Challenging Behaviors” on Friday, Oct. 7 in Rathburn Hall on campus.

Young children’s challenging behaviors are not only a hot topic in early childhood education, but often are hot buttons for professionals and parents. In true symposium style this event will feature experts in early childhood mental health who will share insights into how adults can help children work through and even avoid challenging behaviors. 

Participants will use reflection to process strategies that will help them meet their own needs as well as the children’s in these challenging encounters. The goal is for participants to leave with an action plan for their next steps. 

Speakers include: 

• Frasier B. Zahniser, M.Ed, CFCS; Penn State Extension Better Kid Care educator, Mercer County LEARN coordinator, certified instructor for Strengthening Families and The Pyramid Model in Pennsylvania and conducts training of trainers in other states for the US Department of Defense/USDA Childcare & Youth Training & Technical Assistance Project. 
• Diana Schwab, M.Ed., LCSW; private practice therapist, adjunct faculty for infant mental health at Chatham University, developmental specialist with Kids Plus Pediatrics, nationally registered Child Parent Psychotherapy provider, consultant for reflective practice in a variety of settings that work with families and children.
• Vivian Herman, MSW; private infant mental health consultant, adjunct faculty for infant mental health program at Chatham University, B.S. in child development/child care and masters in social work from the University of Pittsburgh. She is trained and rostered in Child-Parent Psychotherapy, consultant on parent-child work with particular emphasis on families living in poverty and foster & adopting families.​
