What are the main focuses of your research?

  • Electrohydrodynamic enhanced food drying, heat transfer

What specific courses or specialties do you teach?

  • Survey of Alternative Energy Systems – Renewable energy is a must-need of the future and it is important to understand the science and issues surrounding these technologies.
  • Principles of Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning – All buildings need to be heated/cooled/humidified/dehumidified. It is a thriving field and this course dives into the principles surrounding HVAC design in buildings.

What is the most important piece of advice you give your students to help them succeed?
Students should be taught how to think, not memorize. Being an engineer is not memorizing formulas in order to “get the right answer.” It is important to marry to principles behind the understanding of science and the application. Engineering is an applied science, we should be using the fundamentals in science to think through and problem solve.

Is there any additional personal experience you would like to share?
I am also involved in the mechanical engineering study abroad program. My father is from France, and I use my connection with France help manage the College's European Study Center in Nantes, France. This program enrolls over 30 percent of the mechanical engineering junior class to study in France for a semester in the fall semester junior year. I believe it is a great way for engineers to expand their soft skills interaction in a foreign environment. The world is becoming a smaller and smaller place. I believe that study abroad helps young engineers to enhance intercultural communication, which will be a needed skill on any international engineering project.
