How would you describe the level of academics you have experienced during your time at GCC?
While GCC has a high standard of academics, with challenging and rigorous coursework, I did not find that the work was challenging simply to be challenging but as part of the development of the student. Academic success is also very possible due to the wide range of support available.
What drew you to choose Modern Languages as your major?
When I started at GCC, Spanish was not part of my plans. However, after taking one class, I knew that I wanted to continue studying Spanish, and by the end of sophomore year, Spanish had gone from a distant idea to my main area of focus. Though language has been an area of interest for me, what drew me in and influenced me to choose Spanish as my major was the variety of subject matter taught in the classes (like literature, history, philosophy, and more) as well as the community that I was able to build, not only with fellow students, but the support and wisdom of the professors. I have not had any regrets with my choice; studying Spanish has opened so many doors to incredible experiences, allowing me to serve the Lord and others at home and abroad.
How do the academics challenge students to think on a deeper level about the world and life in general?
One of GCC’s strengths lies in its liberal arts education. The ability to take a wide range of classes enables students to critically think and apply what they are learning to more than their major emphasis. This is important as it seems that education is often viewed as merely vocational training. Having to learn to research for a history paper, think through a philosophical argument, solve an integral, and learn a new language prepares students to be flexible in their reasoning. GCC’s education cultivates students who can think deeply from a biblical worldview, applying skills and concepts learned in the classroom to the world and life in general.
