Computer Science earns ABET accreditation

Grove City College’s bachelor’s degree program in Computer Science has been accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, the global accreditor of college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering and engineering technology.

ABET accreditation assures that programs meet standards to produce graduates ready to enter critical technical fields that are leading the way in innovation and emerging technologies, and anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public.

“We are pleased with attaining ABET accreditation for the first time for the computer science program. Since it was started, we have provided our students with a program that prepares them for success in graduate school and high-tech industries, while instilling a sense of innovation and commitment to the good of society. ABET accreditation confirms that we are doing this,” Dr. William P. Birmingham, chair of the Computer Science Department, said.

“Our computer science program maintains high standards and offers a wonderful education for students. Additionally, active engagement by the department with leaders in the field helps to ensure that our programs stay highly relevant.” Dr. Robert Graham, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, said.

Sought worldwide, ABET’s voluntary peer-review process is highly respected because it adds critical value to academic programs in the technical disciplines, where quality, precision and safety are of the utmost importance. Grove City College also offers ABET-accredited degree programs in Electrical Engineering and in Mechanical Engineering.

“ABET accreditation affirms the value of the computer science program at Grove City College,” added Dr. Stacy G. Birmingham, dean of the Hopeman School of Science, Engineering and Mathematics. “The faculty are committed to providing our students with exceptional learning experiences that prepares to them to be successful in their careers.”

Developed by technical professionals from ABET’s member societies, ABET criteria focus on what students experience and learn. ABET accreditation reviews look at program curricula, faculty, facilities and institutional support and are conducted by teams of highly skilled professionals from industry, academia and government, with expertise in the ABET disciplines. ABET is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. It currently accredits almost 3,500 programs at nearly 700 colleges and universities in 28 countries.
