I love helping my students see how securities markets improve global living standards by coordinating productive activities.
What is the most important piece of advice you give students to help them succeed?
Participation in capital markets, is, for the Christian, one way of participating in God’s redemption of a fallen world: we steward the Creation by moving scarce resources from idleness into productivity. In general, to realize a positive return on investment means that you have acted wisely – you have improved what God has given you such that its value to others has increased.
But participation in capital markets also – like any earthly activity – comes with temptations to particular vices. I try to teach finance in such a way that the focus is always on creating value as opposed getting rich. The point of studying capital markets is not to learn how to satisfy our own desires, but to learn how to serve others well.
