New ‘Mind of Madison’ course examines founder’s political vision

The Institute for Faith & Freedom Academy at Grove City College is rolling out a new free online class that explores the life and work of founding father James Madison.

“The Mind of Madison,” a seven-part course, is taught by Visiting Scholar Jay Cost, a nationally respected writer and thinker whose latest book is “James Madison: America's First Politician.”

Jay Cost

Madison, the nation’s fourth president, is known as the “Father of the Constitution” and was at the center of most American political debates for forty years, more than any of the founders except John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. Madison, more than anyone else, invented American politics and a careful study of his life and work may be helpful in learning how to handle a seemingly dysfunctional modern political environment.

Through Madison, students can gain a sense of how politics is supposed to function and how, by returning to his insights, we can be reminded of long-lost truths.

The Institute for Faith & Freedom at Grove City College is a conservative think tank that advances the idea that America is exceptional because its foundation rests on the principles of faith, freedom and truth. It seeks to pass on those values to the next generation of American leaders through a dynamic learning community that connects, educates and empowers American citizens.

Cost is the Gerald R. Ford Visiting Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. He has written for the Wall Street Journal, National Review and the Atlantic and holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Chicago. He is the author of several books, including “The Price of Greatness” and “A Republic No More.”
