Lux Mea Film Festival turns light on student filmmakers

Grove City College’s Lux Mea Film Festival returns to campus at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 18 in the historic Crawford Auditorium.

The festival features films created by Grove City College students and is in its sixth year. Lux Mea is Latin for “My Light,” the College’s motto, and the festival focuses on redemptive storytelling and spiritual truth.

“A redemptive story should tell the truth about what it means to be a human being made in the image of God, and that can take a lot of different forms for a lot of different people,” Professor of Communication and Visual Arts Greg Bandy said.

“We want stories that make sense and that are engaging. We also want stories that reflect a certain level of technical and creative craftsmanship. The judges are looking for excellence in all areas,” he said.

Bandy said he’s looking forward to seeing what new stories the filmmakers come up with this year. Entrants include returning student filmmakers and new blood. One freshman is developing a musical, he said.

Grove City College students who are interested in submitting a film can learn more at luxmeafilmfestival.com/submit-a-film. The deadline is April 7.

Bandy’s Special Events and Promotions class plans and executes the film festival each spring. Through the class, students gain hands-on experience the ins and outs of putting on a large-scale event, including a “red carpet” experience and reception for festival attendees.

Students learn how to work with others as part of a team and take initiative to complete their own tasks in an environment akin to an internship experience.

Last year, about 1,000 people attended the film festival and the Lux Mea team is expecting a packed house again. One of Bandy’s goals for the festival is to improve the reception experience.

“We have an incredibly qualified team who is already taking the steps to make the party a great event,” he said.

Lux Mea Film Festival tickets are available at Breen Student Union on campus or online on April 7 at luxmeafilmfestival.com.
