Vision & Values conference examines impact of WWI

The Center for Vision & Values at Grove City College is holding its 2018 Annual Conference “World War I and the Shaping of the Modern World” on Thursday, April 12 and Friday, April 13 on campus.

The Center’s annual conferences bring together academics, thought leaders, experts and those interested in a better understanding society and the events and issues that shape it.

World War I ended 100 years ago. It was, up to that point, the deadliest conflict in world history and those who survived it vainly hoped that it really was “the war to end all wars.” The conflict gave us the modern age, for better or worse. It brought the United States to prominence as a world power, helped usher in the Bolshevik revolution in Russia, laid the groundwork for the rise of fascism in Germany, shattered the class structure of much of old Europe and made it clear that in the industrial age, death could – and would – be mass produced.

Conference topics range from the various major legacies of World War I—the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, the end of monarchical dominance—to less-obvious themes, such as life on the home-fronts during and immediately after the war.

Dr. Joseph Loconte, author and professor of history at The King’s College, will deliver the conference’s keynote address “Tolkien, Lewis and the Great War” at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 12 in Sticht Lecture Hall of the Hall of Arts and Letters.

Other featured guests include: Michael Medved, nationally syndicated talk radio host, best-selling author and film critic; George Nash, historian and author; Marc LiVecche, managing editor of Providence and scholar of Christian ethics, war and peace at the Institute on Religion and Democracy; Benjamin Wetzel, research associate at the Cushwa Center at the University of Notre Dame; and Andrew Kloes, historian at the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Grove City College faculty members from a variety of disciplines are key contributors to the conference.
