GCC students take top spots with stock picks, financial plans

Grove City College’s Accounting and Finance students posted victories in recent financial planning and stock picking competitions.

Grovers comprised the top team in the Adirondack Cup stock picking contest and won three of the top five winners of the recently completed Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Society of Pittsburgh’s Collegiate Financial Planning Competition.

In the Adirondack Cup, Alex Hartzel, a junior Accounting and Finance double major from Lansdale, Pa., Cassidy Kohmann, a junior Accounting and Biblical and Religious Studies double major from Copley, Ohio, and Owen North, a sophomore Finance major from Pittsburgh, teamed up to create a hypothetical small cap portfolio and run it for six months. Their investments posted a return of 163.22%, outpacing their nearest rival Skidmore College by 1.21%, and the rest of the field by at least 70%. 

Operated by Adirondack Funds, the competition is open to students from participating universities and colleges throughout New York, New England and beyond.

In the CFA competition, Erin Greer, a senior Accounting and Finance double major from Valencia, Pa., took third place, Adam Densmore, a senior Accounting and Finance double major from Denver, Co., fourth, and Emily Kuhn, a senior Finance major from Brownstown, Pa., fifth. Each garnered at least one first-place vote from one of the CFA Society's 22 reviewers. They also received a cash prize for their efforts.

Their plans were selected from more than 200 submitted from competition that included teams from the region’s top colleges and universities, according to the society. Students created personal financial plans for one, three and five years beyond college. Grove City College students have been a fixture in the CFA finalist list since 2018.

“The Accounting and finance program at Grove City college offers our students not only a robust classroom experience but also various avenues in which they can apply their knowledge outside of the classroom. The students and competitions mentioned here are representative of the excellent life-application skills students are gaining, validating the distinctive liberal arts education provided by GCC,” Nicole Stone, department chair and associate professor of Accounting, said.

The Department of Accounting and Finance at Grove City College offers nationally renowned programs and is part of the College’s ACBSP-accredited business program.
