Farmer to discuss how entrepreneurship, chickens fight poverty

Grove City College welcomes Andrew Cunningham – the CEO and founder of New Horizons, a social enterprise organization based in Nampula, Mozambique – to the Richard G. Staley ’62 Visionary Entrepreneur Speaker Series at 4 p.m. Monday, March 7, in the Great Room of Breen Student Union.

He will discuss “Starting from Scratch: How Entrepreneurship & Chickens are Fighting Poverty in Mozambique.”

Cunningham, a Zimbabwean farmer, started the company in 2005 to help rural subsistence farmers produce the lowest-cost chicken in the world. New Horizons provides training and advice to about 200 local farmers, along with hatchery, slaughterhouse, freezing, packaging and sales assistance. Its hatchery produces about 40,000 chicks a week. Cunningham also serves on the leadership team of Communities of Fusion, which incorporates two commercial egg laying businesses, a school, a leadership college and a church plant.

The speaker series brings successful entrepreneurs to Grove City College to share stories of success and advice with students. Staley, a chemical engineering major during his time at Grove City College, pursued his entrepreneurial dream when he founded Flavor House, a leading flavoring and extract manufacturer.
