Exercise Science Symposium explores ‘Mind-Body Connection’

The annual Grove City College Exercise Science Symposium will explore the relationship between mental health and exercise science related topics.

The “Mind Body Connection” symposium is Saturday on campus. The College’s Exercise Science Club, a student-led organization, coordinates the annual conference.

Educators, practitioners, professionals, and students will investigate the effects of exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle on one's mental health and cognitive functioning, according to Morgan Blanchflower, senior chair of the symposium planning committee.

The symposium schedule includes:

• 9 a.m. in the Wolverine Arena of the Physical Learning Center: Strength and Conditioning Specialist Krista Matsko will lead a hands-on session demonstrating the effects of velocity training for athletes in season.
• 10 a.m., Wolverine Arena: Physical Therapist Dr. Casey Unverzagt leads a hands-on session about returning to sports and other activities after an ACL injury.
• 11 a.m. to noon – Lunch in the Atrium of STEM Hall on campus, where student research will be on display.
• 12 to 12:30 p.m., in STEM 051: Dr. Madison Kackley of Ohio State University lectures on the connection between food and diets on cognitive functioning.
• 12:30 to 1 p.m., STEM 051: Dr. Swathi Gujral from the University of Pittsburgh on the benefits of exercise on emotional wellness across the lifespan.
• 1 to 1:30 p.m., STEM 051: Dr. Zachary Chaplow from OSU on different habits that can affect one's mental health.
• 1:30 to 2 p.m., STEM 051: Question-and-answer panel and discussion.
