Alum to screen upcoming film on campus

Grove City College alumnus Spencer Folmar ’10 will screen his upcoming film “Generational Sins” and field questions from the audience at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19 in Sticht Lecture Hall in the Hall of Arts and Letters on campus.

The event is free and open to the public.

"Generational Sins" is Folmar’s third feature film. It tells the story of two estranged brothers who are brought together by the death of their mother and her wish to see them reunited with their abusive, alcoholic father. The brothers set out on an emotional journey that leads them to their hometown and a past that one brother can’t remember and the other can’t forget. 

It is “a powerful and emotional drama about family history and the inevitable task of facing your past,” Folmar said. “This film aims to illuminate this difficult process in a very real, gritty, winsome and original way. In crafting and refining the story, I initially wanted this film to have heart and to speak objective truth.”

The film is set for release Oct. 6 at a number of theaters around the country, including The Guthrie Theater in Grove City.

“This is a great opportunity for students and the general public to get a sneak preview of the film and hear about the challenges and rewards of creation from the director as he shares his experiences,” Dr. Kim Miller, professor of Communication and Visual Arts, said. 

Folmar earned a bachelor’s degree in Communications Studies from Grove City College and earned a master’s degree in theology from Reformed Theological Seminary. He studied at the New York Film Academy, Maine Media Workshop and was an MFA candidate for Film at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.

He founded Third Brother Films to produce and direct “compelling stories about the human condition … in a way that artistically reflects the mind and spirit of Jesus Christ,” according to the production company’s website. Folmar made his first two feature films before he was 21. His second film, “Guilt & Sentence” (2010) won Excellence in Filmmaking and Best Screenplay at the Los Angeles Movie Awards.
