The Grove City College Symphony and Chamber Orchestras’ final concert of the academic year is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 3 in Ketler Auditorium of the Pew Fine Arts Center on campus.
The concert is free and open to the public. It will be livestreamed at gcc.edu/livemusic.
The Chamber Orchestra will perform Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Sheherazade,” featuring student conductor Brooke Litzinger ’24, a music education major.
The Symphony Orchestra will open with Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture followed by Leroy Anderson’s “The Typewriter” and Borodin’s “Polovtsian Dances.” The orchestra will then end with the “Flying Theme” from the movie “E.T.”
The orchestras’ seniors will be honored at the show along with the recipient of the Clifford and Joanne Cox Award for Musical Excellence, which recognizes a student who embodies musical excellence, dedication to the orchestra, and a positive attitude toward the orchestra program and Music Department.
Dr. Jeffrey Tedford ’00, director of Orchestral Activities and chair of the Department of Music, conducts both groups.
“This concert is bittersweet in that we are performing some amazing music but also saying good-bye to our seniors,” Tedford said. “These seniors, who lost their final concerts during their high school senior year, have been instrumental in helping the GCC Orchestra program to thrive in the years after COVID. I have enjoyed working with this group of incredible men and women and look forward to watching them succeed after graduation,” he said.
