Holly Guevara
  • Ph.D. Organic Chemistry, University of New Hampshire
  • B.S. Chemistry, Eastern Nazarene College
What are the main focuses of your research?
Benzene, a known carcinogen and environmental pollutant, and the synthesis of stimuli-responsive hyperbranched polymers comprised of rotaxane building blocks.
Courses Taught
  • General Chemistry Lecture/Lab (CHEM 101 and 102)
  • Advanced Molecular Spectroscopy (CHEM 453)
  • Advanced Synthesis Laboratory (CHEM 458)
I enjoy making new compounds and manipulating the conditions of a reaction to produce the desired product. With organic synthesis also comes analysis, and an organic chemist’s tools of choice involve NMR and IR spectroscopy. Solving these problems is like solving a puzzle with various amounts of information, both challenging and exciting.
What is the most important piece of advice you give to students to help them succeed?
I advise students to take ownership of their classwork, extracurricular activities, and opportunities. By making your education your own, you are more likely to enjoy what you do. Enjoying what you do will help you succeed. I encourage this by allowing students to have independence in the classroom.
Selected Publications

Is there any additional personal experience you would like to share?
I enjoy outdoor activities like biking, hiking, skiing, and kayaking. I also enjoy reading and gardening.
