Visiting novelists to discuss craft and business of writing

The Grove City College Department of English and the student literary magazines The Echo and The Quad are sponsoring a visiting writers event at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct 25 in the Morledge Great Room of Rathburn Hall on campus.

Authors Andrew J. Graff and Kimi Cunningham Grant will read from their work and participate in a Q&A led by English faculty Dr. Adam Loretto ’05 and Dr. Annie Shepherd. The event is free and open to the public.

Grant is the USA Today-bestselling author of “These Silent Woods,” “Fallen Mountains,” and “Silver Like Dust.” She is a two-time winner of a Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Memorial Prize in Poetry and a recipient of a Pennsylvania Council on the Arts fellowship in creative nonfiction. Her new novel, “The Nature of Disappearing,” came out in June.

Graff is the director of Creative Writing at Wittenberg University. His fiction and essays have appeared in “Image” and “Dappled Things.” Graff grew up fishing, hiking, and hunting in Wisconsin's Northwoods, which inspired his debut novel “Raft of Stars.” Harper Collins published Graff’s latest novel, “True North.”

“This is a good opportunity for anyone interested in learning more about the book publication process, the novel writing process, how to think pragmatically about pursuing creative passions while still finding means of financial support, mystery novels, thrillers, coming-of-age novels, character-driven fiction, getting a master of fine arts in creative writing, and the connection between faith and art, to name a few,” Shepherd said.

Grant and Graff’s visit to the College is a continuation of an ongoing series hosted by the English Department and the student publications.

The Echo is a student-produced, creative magazine publication featuring student poetry, prose, fiction, photography, and artwork. The magazine is published each fall and spring. The Quad publishes a broad range of intellectual works, essays, and book reviews, as well as travelogues, poetry, and non-fiction narratives, both online and in print.
