Grove City College to host Rugby 7s Tournament

Grove City College will host seven schools in the 2013 National Small College Rugby Central East 7s Regional Qualifier on Saturday, April 13. Winning teams will earn a berth to compete for the National Small College Rugby Organization (NSCRO) championship. The tournament’s pool games will be played at intramural fields #5 and #6, while the knockout rounds and finals will be played at Thorn Field on campus. The first tournament match will begin at 10 a.m. with the Cup Final scheduled for 8 p.m.

The participating schools in the qualifier are Allegheny College, Ashland University, Carnegie Mellon University, Denison University, Fairmont State University, Grove City College, Notre Dame College and Robert Morris University.

Rugby Sevens, also known as seven-a-side, is a variant of rugby union in which teams are made up of seven players instead of the usual 15, with shorter matches. The game is popular at all levels and is one of the most well distributed forms of rugby.

“The Grove City College 7s Rugby Team is proud to host and compete in this regional qualifying tournament, and we are excited to promote our campus and community to the traveling collegiate ruggers, family and friends,” Grove City College Rugby 7s Coach Geoff Jordan said.

The Grove City College Men’s Rugby club team was ranked fourth in the country by the NSCRO out of 210 eligible clubs across the country. Grove City College is a member of the Three Rivers Rugby Conference.
