Douglas A. Browne is a Professor of Music and
Director of Choirs at Grove City College, Grove City, Pennsylvania. A native of
Long Island, New York, Dr. Browne holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Houghton
College (New York), a Master of Arts degree from West Texas State University,
and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Conservatory of Music, University
of Missouri-Kansas City. He has taught in the public schools of New York and
Texas and has directed choral organizations at both West Texas State University
and the University of Missouri-Kansas City. While serving in the U.S. Army, Dr.
Browne directed the Green Beret Soldiers' Chorus at Fort Bragg, North Carolina,
and the Saigon Choral Society in South Vietnam.
During Dr.
Browne's five years as choral director at Robert E. Lee High School in Midland,
Texas, his choir received wide recognition by earning first place trophies at
several national competitive choral festivals. Also, the choir was selected to
perform in Kansas City, Missouri for the 1977 North Central / Southwestern
Division Convention of the Music Educators National Conference.
The Grove City College Touring Choir
under Dr. Browne's direction has
performed at the annual conventions of the Pennsylvania Music Educators
Association in 1984, 1986, 1990, 1997, 2004, and 2009, and the Eastern Division
Convention of the Music Educators National Conference in 1987 and 1991. While on
tour in California in 2001 the choir sang for the Palm Sunday services at the
Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove. In February of 2002 the choir performed at
the Eastern Division Convention of the American Choral Directors Association.
Since 2002, the choir has also performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra,
the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Wheeling (WV) Symphony Orchestra,
and the Erie (PA) Philharmonic Orchestra.
Dr. Browne has
served as clinician and/or adjudicator in the states of Texas, New Mexico,
Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, and
Connecticut. Currently he serves as an adjudicator for North American Music
Festivals. In 1988 he was the conductor of the Pennsylvania High School
All-State Chorus. His professional memberships include the American Choral
Directors Association, the Music Educators National Conference, the Pennsylvania
Music Educators Association, and Pi Kappa Lambda music honor society. From
2001-2005, Dr. Browne was a member of the 20-voice professional core of the
Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh.
A member of the music faculty of Grove City College since 1981, Dr. Browne
directs the Chapel and Touring Choirs, and teaches voice, solfeggio, and choral
conducting. He is listed in the 4th, 5th, 8th,
and 11th editions of
Who’s Who Among American Teachers.
