2010 Jack Kennedy Memorial Alumni Achievement Award Winners
Major General Robert C. Kane ’79 is Commander, Spaatz Center for Officer Education, and Commandant, Air War College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. The Spaatz Center directs, integrates, synchronizes and supports a continuum of officer professional education, research and outreach that produces leaders for joint and multinational environments. The Air War College is the Air Force's senior professional military education institution, providing post-graduate senior leader development programs focused on joint, multinational, multi-agency warfighting and international security operations, air, space and cyberspace force strategy development and national security planning.
General Kane entered the Air Force in 1980 after receiving his commission through the ROTC program at Grove City College, Pa. He has served in Turkey, Korea, Germany and Iraq in a wide variety of operational and staff assignments, including commands at the squadron, group, wing and center levels. As Commander of the 86th Airlift Wing and Kaiserslautern Military Community, he was instrumental in leading the Ramstein community to win the 2006 Commander in Chief Annual Award for Installation Excellence. Prior to his current assignment, he was the Commanding General, Coalition Air Force Transition Team, Baghdad, Iraq, responsible for coalition efforts to rebuild the Iraqi air force.
General Kane is a command pilot with more than 4,200 hours in the C-130, C-21, KC-135, C-37, C-32, VC-137, C-12, C-141, T-37 and T-38.
Donald A. Shockey, Jr. ’63, Director of SRI International’s Center for Fracture Physics, is an internationally recognized expert in fracture of materials and structures. He joined SRI in 1971 after earning a doctorate in Materials Science at Carnegie-Mellon University and completing a 3-year post-doctoral appointment at the Ernst-Mach-Institut in Freiburg, Germany. In his 39 years at SRI he has directed over 350 research projects for government and industry. His current efforts include developing new transparent materials and structural designs for weight-efficient windows on military vehicles and spacecraft; tear-resistant astronaut gloves; stents for coronary and peripheral arteries; and advanced fractographic methods for diagnosing failures and predicting the useful life of aircraft, bridges, and pipelines. He has published more than 150 technical articles, holds several patents, and serves on the NASA panel of Materials Experts and on a National Academy of Sciences committee. He is an Institute Fellow, a Fellow of ASM International, the Year 2000 recipient of the John S. Rinehart award for pioneering work in the field of dynamic fracture, and the 2006 recipient of the Murray Medal for excellence in experimental mechanics. A long-time ski patroller, he enjoys winter mountaineering, backpacking, and ocean diving. Don and wife, Jan, have 4 children and 7 grandchildren.
James P. VanEerden ’85 is a Co-founder and Managing Director of The Helixx Group, a merchant bank for high-impact entrepreneurs that is based in Indianapolis. Jim heads up the firm’s media and philanthropy ventures. His commentary involving media and non-profit work has appeared in USA TODAY and other publications, and he has been a speaker at the National Press Club and forums internationally, including a recent guest lectureship at Harvard on the subject of "Philanthropy 2.0."
Jim first became involved in film investing with the Academy Award nominated short film, MOST (2004). He has since served in Executive Producer roles for several award-winning feature films – including Bobby Jones (2004), The Ultimate Gift (2007) and The Perfect Game (2010), and for the highly acclaimed documentary feature films, WarChild (2008) and Running the Sahara (2009), which he executive produced with Matt Damon. He is currently in production on a documentary called In God We Still Trust, and is Chief Editor of Life(n) Media.
Jim’s work in philanthropy has involved him in numerous board roles. Together with Mia Hamm, Steve Nash, Serena Williams and others, he co-founded and is on the Board of MISSION Products, the world’s leading athlete-engineered skincare company. He has served as Board Chairman for The H2O Africa Foundation (a large-scale water charity campaign), and as a founding Board Director for BDA Foundation (a non-profit effort to advance biotechnology for sustainable development in Africa). He has also served as a member of the Board of Governors for Opportunity International (the world's largest faith-based micro-lending agency), and for Wilberforce Forum (Chuck Colson's worldview ministry) – for whom he originated Colson’s nationwide “Centurions Fellowship.”
Jim graduated from Grove City College in 1985. He later completed the MA program in philosophy at Trinity International University, a graduate study program at Oxford University (St. Peter's College), and the MBA program at Wake Forest University. He is presently a candidate for a doctoral degree in Education at Gordon Conwell. He and his wife Rachel have eleven children and live on a family homestead near Greensboro, North Carolina.
2010 Distinguished Service Award Winner
Stanley M. Johnson ’60 had a 37-year career in information technology management, primarily as Chief Information Office for the Port of Los Angeles, the nation’s leading port authority. In retirement, his pro bono involvements include directorship positions with IS Associates Program at the UCLA Anderson School of Management, and the Westside Center for Independent Living which assists the severely disabled.
Mr. Johnson has been involved with the College in numerous capacities. Since the 1970’s, he and his wife, Karen, have hosted the Alumni events in the Los Angeles area. In addition, he was a member of the Alumni Council for many years, including serving as Council President in 1994 and 1995. Further, he has been a member of the College’s Board of Trustees since 1995. In 1999, Mr. Johnson was awarded the Jack Kennedy Alumni Achievement Award for his career in Information Technology.
Mr. Johnson has been intimately involved with two of the College’s major education initiatives. Through his relationship with the then-CEO of Compaq computers, he was able to assist the College in creating its Laptop Computer Initiative, one of the first in the nation. In addition, based upon his international career experience, he was instrumental in the planning and development of the College’s Office of International Education, and has traveled to France and China with College staff to assist in the implementation of this Program.
