GROVE CITY, Pa. – The 2008-09 Grove City College Guest Artist Series features four performances, beginning with the River City Brass Band on Sept. 15. All events are public and begin at 7:30 p.m. in Ketler Auditorium of the Pew Fine Arts Center on campus.
The River City Brass Band, founded in 1981, is composed of 25 brass players and three percussionists. The band combines the richness of a symphony orchestra, the intimacy of a chamber ensemble, the toe-tapping brilliance of a military band and the swinging sound of a big band. Maestro Denis Colwell crafts a creative musical program that educates and entertains.
Troupe America will perform the musical comedy, “Church Basement Ladies,” Nov. 17. A celebration of the church basement kitchen and the women who work there, “Church Basement Ladies” features four distinct characters and their relationships as they organize the food and solve the problems of a rural Minnesota church about to undergo changes in 1964. They stave off potential disasters, share and debate recipes, instruct the young and keep the pastor on due course while enjoying (and tolerating) each other as the “steel magnolias” of the church.
On Feb. 17, 2009, Pittsburgh Opera Theater will present “Porgy and Bess.” George Gershwin’s opera is a mix of classical and popular music, jazz and blues. The poignant tale deals with African American life in the fictitious Catfish Row in Charleston, S.C., in the early 1920s The folk opera premiered in 1935 and is now regularly performed internationally. The song, “Summertime,” is one of its many tunes.
The U.S. Army Field Band Jazz Ambassadors will conclude the series on April 20, 2009. The internationally acclaimed Jazz Ambassadors is the United States Army’s premier touring jazz orchestra. This 19-member big band has received great acclaim both at home and abroad performing America’s original art form, jazz. Concerts are designed to entertain all types of audiences. Their diverse repertoire includes big band swing, bebop, Latin, contemporary jazz, Dixieland, vocals and patriotic selections.
The River City Brass Band, “Church Basement Ladies and “Porgy and Bess” each cost $10. The Jazz Ambassadors performance is free, although tickets are still required. Tickets for the Guest Artist Series are available in the Financial Services Office on the second floor of Crawford Hall. For ticket information, call (724) 458-2194.
