GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City College senior Hana Yasaki received the JoAnne Day Student of the Year Award in the non-profit category, recognizing her as an outstanding intern at a member institution in education, social science/service or humanities. The awards, presented by the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Employers (PennACE), provide $500 to each winner of the technical, business and non-profit categories.
Yasaki, who is working towards a degree in psychology with a minor in family studies, interned with the Make-A-Wish Foundation in Cleveland during the summer of 2011. Through her work, Yasaki secured more than $9,000 in donations for the foundation, as well as helped to build a community BMX bike park, a wish that had not been achieved before.
During her internship, Yasaki managed wish referrals, coordinated specific wishes for families, obtained new wish resources and developed and maintained relationships with donors, doctors, families, case workers, volunteers and venders.
Yasaki “exhibited professionalism and commitment to [the] foundation and the children [it] serves,” her employer sponsor said.
At Grove City College, Yasaki is active in Homecoming Committee, Parents’ Weekend, Orientation Board and Project Okello, which raises awareness and financial support for the rehabilitation of recovered child-soldiers in Uganda. She also serves as the family relationships and rural community coordinator for a service-learning collaboration, teaching assistant for the art department and student photographer for the marketing and communications department.
PennACE is a collaborative organization of career development and recruitment professionals that provides professional growth and networking opportunities designed to enhance career development practices for Pennsylvania college and university students and graduates.
