March 19, 2010
GROVE CITY, Pa. – Dr. L. John Van Til, a fellow of law and humanities with The Center for Vision & Values at Grove City College, will examine the presidency of Calvin Coolidge to provide historical understanding to present political struggles during the March 30 American Founders Luncheon. The luncheon, “Thoughtful Cal, the Founders and the Progressives,” is hosted by the Center and is scheduled to take place at the Rivers Club in Pittsburgh.
Sponsored by the Center and the Pittsburgh Federalist Society, the American Founders Luncheon Series brings to Pittsburgh respected scholars on America’s founding to present talks focused on the beliefs, actions and character of those leaders who pursued a “Great Experiment” in whether humans are capable of governing themselves.
The lecture will explore the ideology of President Coolidge, specifically his high regard for the Founding Fathers and the Declaration of Independence. The lecture will also discuss how Coolidge’s thoughtful decision-making and articulate communication allowed him to be America’s most popular politician throughout the 1920s.
Van Til, a retired chair and professor of business, history and humanities at Grove City College from 1972 to 2004, assisted in developing the College’s core curriculum. Van Til has written more than 200 articles or essays on theology, philosophy, history and public policy. Author of “Liberty of Conscience,” Van Til has also edited three volumes of President Coolidge’s writings.
The program is a prelude to The Center for Vision & Values annual conference “Train Wreck: Progressive Surge, Conservative Crack up?” The conference will take place on April 18-19, featuring many of the country’s leading experts in the Progressive movement.
The Founders Luncheon costs $17.76. To register, log onto http://www.grovecityconference.com/founders/ or contact Brenda Vinton at (724) 450-1541 or blvinton@gcc.edu.
