GROVE CITY, Pa. – Renowned professor George J. Siedel will give the 2006 J. Paul Sticht ’39 Lecture in Business and Ethics at 7 p.m. Nov. 1 in Sticht Lecture Hall in the Hall of Arts and Letters on the Grove City College campus.
The annual lecture in business and ethics is given in honor of J. Paul Sticht ’39, who has served as a College Trustee since 1963 and was the Board Chairman from 1998 to 2003.
Siedel, who will speak on “Ethical Underpinnings of Business Negotiations,” is the Williamson Family Professor of Business Administration and Thurnau Professor of Business Law at the University of Michigan. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the College Wooster in 1967, his juris doctorate from the University of Michigan in 1970 and diploma from Cambridge University in 1971.
Siedel focuses on legal issues that relate to international business law, negotiation and dispute resolution. Recent publications include the topics of legal aspects of cross-border subsidiary management and issues relating to the use of law to gain competitive advantage. His work in progress includes contracting, the impact of litigation on large corporations and discoveries on electronic communications.
He has been admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court and in Michigan, Ohio and Florida. Following graduation from law school, he worked as an attorney in a professional corporation. He has also served on several boards of directors and as associate dean of the University of Michigan business school.
Siedel has served as the chief editor of the “Michigan Real Property Review” and special editor of the “American Business Law Journal.” The author of numerous books and articles, he has received several research awards, including the Faculty Recognition Award from the University of Michigan and the Hoeber Award from the Academy of Legal Studies in Business. The Center for International Business Education and Research selected a case written by Siedel for its annual International Case Writing Award. His research has been cited by appellate courts in the United States and abroad, including the High Court of Australia.
Siedel has served as visiting professor of business law at Stanford University, visiting professor of business administration at Harvard University and a Parsons Fellow at the University of Sydney. He has been elected a visiting fellow at Cambridge University’s Wolfson College and a Life Fellow of the Michigan State Bar Foundation. As a Fulbright Scholar, Siedel held a distinguished chair in the humanities and social sciences.
