GROVE CITY, Pa. – Two concerts on the Grove City College campus are set for April 25 and 27.
The first is the annual spring orchestra concert at 8 p.m. April 25 in Ketler Auditorium of the Pew Fine Arts Center, featuring the winners of the Concerto Competition held earlier in the semester. This 14th annual competition recognized students on campus with musical talent who competed for a chance to perform with the orchestra.
Selections will be: “Concerto for Flute and Orchestra” by Jacques Ibert, performed on flute by Rebecca Smiddy, a junior from Miami, Fla.; “Concerto for Two Horns and Orchestra” Josef Fiala, performed on French Horn by senior Megan Betteridge and sophomore Jamie Betteridge, both of Pittsford, N.Y.; and “Danse sacree et danse profane” by Claude Debussy, performed on harp by Abigail VanPatter, a sophomore from Matthews, N.C.
Two conducting students will also be on the podium for the orchestra concert: seniors Evelyn Talmage of Marion, Iowa, and Christopher Harrison of Centreville, Md. Talmage will lead Aaron Copland’s “Letter from Home” and Harrison will conduct Gordon Jacob’s “Fantasia on the Alleluia Hymn.”
The orchestra concert will begin with the “Colas Breugnon Overture” by Dimitri Kabalevsky and conclude with the famous “Appalachian Suite” by Aaron Copland. The orchestra is under the direction of Dr. Richard Konzen.
The annual choral concert at 6:30 p.m. April 27 in Harbison Chapel will feature the Chapel Choir singing “Requiem” by John Rutter. The accompaniment will be an instrumental ensemble including Konzen on organ, along with students on flute, oboe, cello, harp, timpani and bells. The Touring Choir and Chamber Singers will also offer selections on the program.
The choral program is under the direction of Dr. Douglas Browne.
Both concerts are free and open to the public. No tickets are required.
