GROVE CITY, Pa. – Area kids and adults alike can enjoy a fun-filled stage experience at this year’s presentation of Grove City College’s Dr. Hilda Adam Kring Children’s Theatre, featuring the play “The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales” based on the popular children’s book by author Jon Scieszka.
Students will present the musical at 7 p.m. April 17 and 18 in the Ketler Auditorium of the Pew Fine Arts Center. The production is under the advisement of Professor Betsy Craig ’77. Admission is free and no tickets are required, therefore guests are encouraged to arrive early to ensure seating. Doors open 30 minutes prior to each performance.
The delightful and offbeat performance is adapted for the stage by Kent Stephens with music by Gary Rue and tells a slightly twisted tale where popular fairy tale figures go awry. The Gingerbread Man becomes the Stinky Cheese Man and finds that no one wants to chase him any longer. Cinderella and Rumpelstiltskin end up starring in the same story, and the Ugly Duckling actually grows up to be an ugly duck. The resulting mayhem results in a magical, farcical retelling of some of favorite tales from childhood.
Dr. Hilda Adam Kring Children’s Theatre is one of the largest Grove City College productions and is almost entirely student-run, from the directors to the costume and set designers. Each year, it attracts thousands of audience members and provides a unique opportunity for Grove City College students to stretch their theatrical talents. Founded by Kring nearly 40 years ago as an outreach theater program initially established for the area’s public schools, Children’s Theatre has since then significantly increased its breadth by expanding its focus to a number of schools outside the district. It was named in her honor in October 2001; Kring died in January 2002.
