GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City College’s alumni magazine, “The GeDUNK,” won the 2011 Clarion Award for the best overall external magazine with a circulation of 100,000 or less. The competition, presented by the Association for Women in Communications (AWC), attracted nearly 400 submissions, with publications judged against the work of peers in size and budget.
Established in 1972, the Clarion Awards honor excellence in more than 100 categories across all communication disciplines, including advertising and marketing; audiovisual productions; books and CDs; brochures, custom and special publications; education; fund development; magazines; major news events; newsletters; newspapers; online media; photography; graphics and design communications; public relations; radio; and television.
In order for consideration for the award, the College provided AWC with the fall 2010 issue of the alumni magazine for review, the magazine’s first redesigned issue since 2004, as well as a description of the publication’s editorial mission. Grove City College also included a synopsis detailing the purpose of the magazine, a research methodology and indentified the magazine’s target audience for the judges.
“The GeDUNK” magazine was named after the on-campus gathering place/snack bar for students since the early 1950s. The magazine, distributed three times per year, has developed into the most preferred method of communication between the College and alumni, faculty, students and friends, according to a survey conducted in the spring of 2010 by the College’s Alumni Office. Through the magazine, Grove City College seeks to highlight alumni achievements as well as campus happenings in an informative yet entertaining fashion.
The Clarion Awards, named for the medieval trumpet known for its clarity, symbolize excellence in clear, concise communications. Winners of the awards represent media companies, leading corporations, small businesses and non-profit associations and institutions. Previous organizations recognized for best overall external magazine include Suffolk University in 2010, Harvard Medical School in 2009 and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in 2008.
