GROVE CITY, Pa. – Six Grove City College standouts competed in the 71st annual William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition for undergraduates. The challenging mathematics exam was completed by more than 4,000 students representing nearly 550 colleges.
The six students who participated in the exam included seniors Douglas Smith of Montoursville, Pa., and Peter Jantsch of Beaver Falls, Pa.; juniors Edward Quigley of Monaca, Pa., and Bradley Weaver of Lebanon, Pa.; sophomore Elisabeth Stewart of Germantown, Wis.; and freshman Mark Schrecengost of Avonmore, Pa.
The exam, which has been offered annually since 1938, consists of two three-hour sittings supervised by faculty of participating schools, with winning teams and individuals receiving monetary rewards. Students are provided 12 questions worth 10 points each. The median score on the difficult exam is typically one point out of the possible 120.
Top Grove City College scorers were Schrecengost totaling 10 points, Jantsch totaling 11 points and Weaver totaling 37 points, who shattered the previous school record of 22 points. Weaver was also ranked in the top 10 percent of scores in the entire competition.
The students were coached by Dr. Gary Thompson, chair of the department of mathematics and professor of mathematics.
