GROVE CITY, Pa. – Two Grove City College students have been chosen to take part in the Foundation for Defense of Democracies Undergraduate Fellowship during the 2007-2008 academic year. Freshman Stephen Wong of Germantown, Md., and junior Sean Varner of Shippensburg, Pa., will attend a two-week course in Tel Aviv, Israel, and a seminar in Washington, D.C., as part of the program, which seeks to inform fellows about the threat of terrorism to democracies.
The fellowship begins in Tel Aviv from July 28-Aug. 12. The course includes several days of lectures from experts in the field of terrorism from Israel, Jordan, India, Turkey and the United States, who will focus on issues relating to the threat that terrorism poses. Fellows will travel to border zones, visit military and police facilities, and participate in hands-on, live-fire exercises to learn more about the reality of combating terrorists.
During the school year, Wong and Varner will plan at least five pro-democracy events to educate students about the threat that terrorism poses to democracies. One must be a Sept. 11 memorial.
In January 2008, the fellows will take part in a four-day seminar in Washington, D.C., where they will hear from academic and professional experts from the United States Congress, Central Intelligence Agency, Department of Defense, Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. State Department. They will also visit the FBI Academy, CIA Headquarters and other national security sites to learn more about America’s role in the war on terrorism.
The Foundation for the Defense of Democracies is non-profit, non-partisan dedicated exclusively to promoting pluralism, defending democratic values and fighting the ideologies that drive terrorism. The foundation was founded after Sept. 11 by a group of philanthropists and policymakers and combines policy research, democracy training, strategic communications and investigative journalism to assess the global terrorist threats threatening democracies.
