GROVE CITY, Pa. – A team of Grove City College students placed 68th out of 516 teams nationwide in the 68th annual Putnam Exam.
Senior Evelyn Talmage of Walker, Iowa, scored 22, which gave her a 300th-place finish out of 3,753 national participants. Her score tied the College’s record for the competition, which was set last year by then-sophomore Phil Deets. This was Talmage’s fourth year participating in the competition.
The team, coached by Dr. Gary Thompson of the math department, included junior Michael Ginter of Newville, Pa, and junior Julia Davis of Dillsburg, Pa, who scored ten points each; junior Phil Deets of Franklin, Pa, who scored a 12; and sophomore Susannah Johnson of Willow Grove, Pa, who scored a 14. Other students included sophomore Lindsay Willett of Round Hill, Va., junior William Robinson of Mason, Ohio, junior Andrew Brinkerhoff of Mason, Ohio, and sophomore Jacob Edmonds of Slippery Rock, Pa.
Sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America, the Putnam Exam is a challenging undergraduate mathematics competition. It consists of two sets of six problems taken over two, three-hour sessions. The median score for the competition is zero, meaning over half the participants in the exam scored a zero.
