GROVE CITY, Pa. – A team of Grove City College students placed 65th out of 508 team entries nationwide and sophomore Philip Deets of Franklin, Pa., set a record for the highest individual score by a Grove City student, according to recently released results of the national William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition.
Sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America, the competition is a challenging undergraduate mathematics exam. It consists of two sets of six problems taken over two, three-hour sessions.
This year’s team included Deets, senior Derek Wiita of Grove City; junior Evelyn Talmage of Marion, Iowa; junior Tim Hopper of Princeton, W.Va.; and freshman Susannah Johnson of Willow Grove, Pa. Deets scored a 22 to set a new Grove City record. Often the competition’s median score is zero, according to Dr. Gary Thompson, the team’s coach and professor of mathematics.
