GROVE CITY, Pa. – Nine students represented Grove City College in a human-powered vehicle competition for the first time, with outstanding results.
Seniors Mike Abel of North Versailles, Pa., Jim Borch of Gambrills, Md., Will Horn of Thibvillers, France, David Kilburn of Meadville, Pa., Doug Locke of Butler, Pa., Ben Rosier of West Alexander, Pa., Jamie Skyrm of Goshen, Ind., and Patrick Willaman of Cochranton, Pa., along with junior Trisha Griffith of Meadville, Pa., placed first in the 2008 American Society of Mechanical Engineers Human Powered Vehicle Challenge East’s Utility Class vehicle competition. The team competed April 25-27 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Madison, Wis.
The team brought home four trophies and $500 in cash. The young engineers placed first in the design competition of the Utility Class – vehicles designed for every-day transportation such as commuting to work or school – as well as third in the Utility Class race and first overall in the Utility Class. They also placed first in the Single Rider Class design competition and fourth overall in the Single Rider Class.
“These students performed exceptionally well at the competition,” said Dr. Mark Archibald, professor of mechanical engineering, who accompanied the students. “They exceeded my expectations in the events, and always presented a professional and sportsmanlike manner.”
