GROVE CITY, Pa. – Senior Nate Mucha of Parma, Ohio, will offer an art exhibit resulting from several months of work during an independent study at Grove City College. Under the direction of Dr. Joshua Drake, assistant professor of music and humanities, Mucha created a series of woodcut prints based on the seven deadly sins. After analyzing numerous classical texts – including Dante’s “Inferno” and Prudentius’ “Psychomachia” – Mucha carved and hand-printed seven artistic representations of the sins.
The exhibition will be shown from Oct. 16 through Nov. 10 in the Pew Fine Arts Center Gallery on the Grove City College campus. Regular gallery hours are 1 to 5 p.m. weekdays and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays. The gallery is closed on Sundays.
His exhibit, “The Seven Deadly Sins,” is a stylized interpretation of the classical texts through the use of tree imagery. The black-ink prints combine human emotions and elements derived from historical interpretations with the organic shapes of various kinds of trees, giving the prints a haunting and suggestive feel, which emphasizes the sins they represent in a realistic yet unique manner.
Mucha will also display several other works, such as “The Four Seasons,” a silkscreen series inspired by Vivaldi’s concerto of the same name. The prints combine carefully selected colors and patterns to represent each season.
“I encourage [gallery patrons] to enjoy the prints first as you would a piece of music, and then to examine them further for the meaning behind them,” Mucha said.
Since September 2006, Mucha has shown pieces in seven exhibitions in Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York.
