GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City College senior engineering student Nate Moore of Grove City, Pa., has been chosen to participate in a highly selective oceanographic fellowship. Moore is one of 27 applicants picked from a pool of 241 to participate in the Summer Student Fellowship program at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution – the largest non-profit oceanographic institution in the world.
At Woods Hole, located in Woods Hole, Mass., near Cape Cod, Moore will conduct an independent research project under the guidance of staff members at the Institution.
“Nate Moore is one of the shining stars in the engineering program at Grove City College, but he’d never admit it,” said Dr. Erik Anderson, assistant professor of mechanical engineering. “He’s got the combination of academic talent and character that make him an outstanding scientist, collaborator and teacher.”
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is the home of the “Alvin” and the “Jason” – two world-famous research vehicles that have discovered new organisms at the bottom of the ocean, and also the Titanic. Moore will work out of the Institution’s Deep Submergence Lab, former home to Dr. Robert Ballard, the discoverer of the Titanic.
Anderson himself is a graduate from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution/MIT Joint Program in Oceanography, Applied Ocean Sciences and Engineering, and conducted his Ph.D. research from the Deep Submergence Lab. He encouraged Moore to apply for the fellowship after the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution requested that alumni recommend outstanding students for the program.
During the application process, Moore submitted a project proposal; his involved using an experimental fluid dynamics system to measure the swimming performance of marine organisms, such as fish and squid, to find new design ideas for oceanographic vehicles.
“This award demonstrates that the College’s engineering students have the stuff it takes to do research at the highest levels,” Anderson said. “It is a great compliment to an engineering program that is already known to have an exceptional employment record. This award accents the lesser known fact that Grove City College sends engineering students to competitive graduate schools each year.”
