GROVE CITY, Pa. – Grove City College Associate Professor of Political Science Dr. Samuel S. Stanton Jr. has been named an “Academic Fellow” for 2010-2011 by the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies (FDD), a non-partisan policy institute headquartered in Washington, D.C. Stanton, from May 29 to June 7, will study in Israel. His fellowship includes an intensive course in terrorism studies, in particular, how democracies can defeat the worldwide terrorist threat.
At Grove City College, Stanton teaches courses on international relations and comparative politics. He also instructs students in courses on national and international security, particularly terrorism and counter-terrorism.
“Terrorism is the greatest threat today to the world’s democracies, including the United States and our allies around the globe,” said Clifford May, president of FDD. “To win the war against terrorism, we must win the war of ideas by promoting democracy and defeating the totalitarian ideologies that drive and justify terrorism.”
The FDD Academic Fellows program provides a 10-day learning experience to U.S.–based teaching and research professionals to provide cutting edge information about defeating terrorist groups. The 2010 program, which will be conducted at Tel Aviv University from May 30 through June 8, includes lectures by academics, military and intelligence officials, and diplomats from Israel, Jordan, India and the U.S. It also includes hands-on experience through visits to police, customs, immigration facilities, military bases and border zones to learn the practical side of deterring and defeating terrorists.
“I am looking forward to the opportunity to listen and participate in the exchanges and interactions which we will all have in Israel,” said Stanton. “It should be a useful experience for a course I plan to teach on terrorism next year and other related courses and personal research.”
Dr. Earl Tilford, Grove City College professor of history from 2001 to 2008, has also served as an FDD Academic Fellow in the past.
