GROVE CITY, Pa. – Constitutional law professor Dr. John Sparks will explain just what a bakery owner and a 1905 U.S. Supreme Court case have to do with the early progressive movement – and challenges to the American business climate then and now – at the Dec. 8 American Founders Luncheon, hosted by The Center for Vision & Values at Grove City College. The luncheon, “The Overregulated Bakery Owner, the Supreme Court and the Founders: Lochner v. New York,” will take place at Pittsburgh’s Rivers Club.
Sponsored by the Center and the Pittsburgh Federalist Society, the American Founders Luncheon Series brings to Pittsburgh respected scholars on America’s founding to present talks focused on the beliefs, actions and character of those leaders who pursued a “Great Experiment” in whether humans are capable of governing themselves.
Joseph Lochner, a bakery owner in Utica, N.Y., was fined in 1905 for employing workers beyond the state’s limit of 60 hours per week. His case went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Sparks will share why the case is still widely discussed and how the court at the beginning of the 20th century sought to rein in the reformist tide that eventually washed, unrestrained, into the New Deal and modern liberalism.
Sparks is dean of the Alva J. Calderwood School of Arts and Letters at Grove City College and teaches U.S. constitutional history and business law. Sparks is a fellow for educational policy with The Center for Vision & Values at Grove City College. He is a graduate of Grove City College and the University of Michigan Law School. Sparks taught for seven years at Hillsdale College in Michigan and began his teaching career at Grove City in 1976. He is the former chairman of the department of business.
The Founders Luncheon costs $17.76. To register, log onto http://afls.grovecityconference.com/overregulated or contact Brenda Vinton at (724) 450-1541 or blvinton@gcc.edu.
