GROVE CITY, Pa. – Dr. Steven Jones, associate professor of sociology at Grove City College, has published his first book, “Religious Schooling in America: Private Education and Public Life.”
Jones called “Religious Schooling in America” a “history of the debate over private education in America,” namely addressing the accusation that supporting religious schooling is un-American. He addresses the charge by tracing the development of religious schooling over the last 125 years. The book, released in 2008, is published by Praeger Publishers.
James Carper from the educational studies department at the University of South Carolina called Jones’ book an “informative and engaging volume [that] traces the development of major religious school movements and the surprisingly common controversies and criticisms that have swirled about them – whether Roman Catholic schools in the 19th century or Protestant day schools and home schooling in the 20th. With the growth of Islamic schools, which Jones carefully examines, Americans will once again have an opportunity to thoughtfully ponder these matters.”
He is currently working on a second manuscript which examines the limits of parental freedom in manipulating the genetic inheritance of their children. In addition to writing, he has edited three books.
Jones has taught at the College since 2004. He earned his bachelor’s from Houston Baptist University in Houston, Tex., his master’s from Duke University and his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. Jones and his wife, Beth, have four children.
