GROVE CITY, Pa. – The 2008-09 Grove City College Guest Artist Series continues with the second of four performances, Troupe America’s musical comedy “Church Basement Ladies” on Nov. 17. All events are public and begin at 7:30 p.m. in Ketler Auditorium of the Pew Fine Arts Center on campus.
A celebration of the church basement kitchen and the women who work there, “Church Basement Ladies” features four distinct characters and their relationships as they organize the food and solve the problems of a rural Minnesota church about to undergo changes in 1964. They stave off potential disasters, share and debate recipes, instruct the young and keep the pastor on due course while enjoying (and tolerating) each other as the “steel magnolias” of the church.
A limited quantity of tickets, which cost $10 each, is still available for the Nov. 17 performance. For more information, contact the Grove City College Financial Services Office at (724) 458-2194.
The series continues on Feb. 17, 2009, with the Pittsburgh Opera Theater’s performance of “Porgy and Bess.” George Gershwin’s opera is a mix of classical and popular music, jazz and blues. The poignant tale deals with African American life in the fictitious Catfish Row in Charleston, S.C., in the early 1920s The folk opera premiered in 1935 and is now regularly performed internationally. The song, “Summertime,” is one of its many tunes.
The U.S. Army Field Band Jazz Ambassadors will conclude the series on April 20, 2009. The internationally acclaimed Jazz Ambassadors is the United States Army’s premier touring jazz orchestra. This 19-member big band has received great acclaim both at home and abroad performing America’s original art form, jazz. Concerts are designed to entertain all types of audiences. Their diverse repertoire includes big band swing, bebop, Latin, contemporary jazz, Dixieland, vocals and patriotic selections.
