GROVE CITY, Pa. – A team of five Grove City College senior electrical and computer engineers finished fourth in the 17th annual Trinity College Fire-Fighting Home Robot Competition in early April. The team competed in a division which included 50 teams from six countries. The students built and programmed the robot for their Senior Experience in Electrical Design project.
The team included seniors Everett DeVries of Somerset, Pa., Tyler Emerick of Cranberry Township, Pa.; Tyler Southard of Westerville, Ohio; Peter Staats of Wenham, Mass.; and Aaron Wood of Indialantic, Fla.
Roberto, the team’s robot, experienced an equipment failure that ended its first run, but rebounded to be recognized as a top robot in the international competition. The team received a score of 720.384, the best point value only behind the University of Akron (33.761), a non-affiliated team from Massachusetts (40.878) and the University of Massachusetts Lowell (621.229).
The competition, which was held in Hartford, Conn., consists of placing the robot in a 10-foot by 10-foot plywood model of an apartment with four rooms. A candle is then randomly placed in one room of the plywood apartment. The objective of the robot is to navigate the halls and rooms, find the candle and extinguish it. Each team is guaranteed two runs, with the promise of a third run if the robot extinguishes the candle. If a team does not extinguish the candle, the team is given the penalty of 600 points for the run.
The Grove City College team was advised by Dr. Myron “Mike” Bright, chair of the department of electrical and computer engineering and professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Dr. Thomas Cavicchi, professor of electrical engineering.
